A User Centered Mindset for Building Spatial Applications
Matthew Hockenberry, Jeff Hoff, Rob Gens, and Ted Selker
Maps govern our understanding of the world in which we liveābut this does not always mean that they govern fairly. placeMap explores a new theoretical framework for mapping applications we call user-centered mapping. Grounded in our understanding of real-world models of spatial decision-making and the failings of traditional mapping applications, user-centered mapping hopes to provide the tools for a new approach to mapping that mirrors the way we think about space. Our research focuses on understanding the existing approaches, finding insights into relevant material about the mental process of mapmaking, and developing a real-world framework for user-centered maps. We can construct a new model for maps that increases our awareness of the world around us.
